J1 has issued a statement denying feverish rumours started by a newspaper in Khartoum that the President convened a meeting to choose a successor. Ateny Wek Ateny while addressing the media in J1 on Monday afternoon said the story and subsequent reports on Facebook are false. He said that the President had not held any meetings following his return from an official state visit to Kapoeta.
Ateny said rumours that the army was going to take over caused people yesterday to leave offices “early to avoid getting caught up in crossfire” and “forced markets to even close”. He said the rumours were started by Al-Wathan newspaper in Khartoum.
The Presidential spokesperson condemned the Khartoum newspaper for publishing the false news. He says neither he or the Minister of Information, Michael Makuei was contacted to confirm or deny the story.
Ateny said the army was deployed across Juba today to show that the government was in control.
