The United States government has pledged an additional $79 million in humanitarian aid for the internally displaced across the country. The aid will assist in shelter, access to clean water, health care, essential household items, legal assistance and educational programs.

The additional assistance now brings the total the US has donated since December 2013 to nearly $1.1 billion.

The additional assistance is part of the nearly $800 million the US government is contributing to the United Nations refugee agency, UNHCR.

In recent weeks, the US government expressed concerns over increased fighting in Unity and Upper Nile states, the widespread displacement of civilians and the denial of access to humanitarian assistance for the most vulnerable.
